Getting Started
The basics of DJing are surprisingly simple. In just 3-5 hours, you can learn the essential theory, potentially surpassing the knowledge of some seasoned DJs.
From there, it’s all about practice. Want to mix in your kitchen for fun? Easy. Looking to play at local clubs or bars? Start by building a high-quality music library.
Building your Library
It’s crucial to know your tracks well. It’s better to have 300 tracks that you’re familiar with than 1,000 that you don’t know. Understanding your music allows for smoother transitions and more engaging mixes.
Tools & Techniques
We’ll explore how to use a DJ controller, identify the best software, and obtain high-quality music. We’ll also cover fundamental mixing theory and harmonic mixing.
Practicing & Performing
After gaining confidence and a solid flow from mixing at home, the next step is performing for an audience. You’ll learn to read the crowd and keep them dancing.
Remember to play 51% for yourself. When you enjoy your mix, others will too. Focus on making yourself happy first; this keeps the energy high and the quality consistent. If only one person is dancing, concentrate on making them happier, and the rest will follow.

FAQ
Do I need to have previous experience?
No. These lessons are available even for complete beginners.
What equipment do I need to get started?
At the beginning, all you need is a computer and a pair of headphones. If you already have a DJ controller, even better, but I can also help you choose the right equipment based on your budget.
To complete your setup, you’ll also need speakers. I can guide you in choosing those as well.
When you’re just starting out, you can even get by with a Bluetooth speaker, provided it has an auxiliary (mini-jack) input, like the headphone jack on a phone. You won’t be able to DJ over Bluetooth because Bluetooth audio introduces latency (delay).
How long will it take me to learn to DJ?
That depends on how much time you can dedicate to practicing, but most people can learn the fundamentals of DJing within 1–3 months.
If you practice consistently for a few hours each week, you can expect something like this:
- 1–2 weeks: Learn the equipment, music organization, cueing, and basic transitions.
- 1 month: Perform smooth transitions between tracks and create short mixes.
- 2–3 months: Build confidence, improve timing and track selection, and play complete DJ sets.
- 6–12 months: Develop your own style, read a crowd more effectively, and perform comfortably in public settings.
The biggest factor isn’t technical skill. It’s practice and familiarity with music. Most beginners are surprised by how quickly they can start mixing songs together, but becoming a great DJ takes time and experience.
My goal is to help you progress as efficiently as possible, avoid common mistakes, and build skills that you can use in real-world DJ sets from the very beginning.
Are lessons online or in person?
Lessons are online via Discord, or in person in Corfu when possible.
In which software will I learn
My software of choice is DJay Pro AI. If you’re already using a different software we can work with that, the techniques are the same.
Which genres do you teach>
I specialize in electronic dance music across a wide spectrum of styles. From laid-back genres such as Downtempo and Deep Dubstep, to melodic mid-tempo styles like Techno and House, all the way to high-energy genres such as Psytrance and Drum & Bass.
The core principles of DJing apply to almost every genre. However, if you’re a beginner, electronic dance music is generally easier for learning the fundamentals because of its consistent rhythms and song structures.
